The 'set_ansi' command allows you to
enable or disable use of the ANSI
standard codes. If they are enabled, you will be able to make better
use of FishRoom's capabilities; different types of messages can be
displayed in different colors and screen and cursor control will be
enhanced.
Your ability to use the ANSI standard codes also depends on your client
software. In order to use the ANSI codes you must be running a
terminal or terminal emulator that responds to the codes. These
include (but are not limited to) VT100, VT220 and ANSI terminals and
terminal emulators. TTY emulation does not respond to ANSI codes.
The ANSI codes are enabled by entering:
set_ansi on
or disabled by entering:
set_ansi off
and pressing Enter. You can't enable the codes unless you previously
defined your normal screen colors (see below).
You can clear your existing settings by entering:
set_ansi reset
and you can display you existing setting by entering:
set_ansi show.
Screen colors can be set or changed by entering a command of the form:
set_ansi <use> [text] <color form> [on <color form>]
and pressing Enter.
Items enclosed in brackets are optional.
<use> defines how the colors will be used. Valid uses and their
meanings are:
normal - Your regular color combination.
Your normal color
layout must be defined before you can enable the ANSI
codes.
urgent - Used for alerts and urgent messages.
mine - Used to display text resulting
from your actions.
theirs - Used to display text resulting from other's
actions.
error - Used to display error text.
query - Used to display prompts.
private - Used to display private messages.
<color form> is one word or a two word phrase. The second (or
only)
word must be a color name. 'bold' and 'flashing' are the only words
other
than a a color name that have meaning in the <color form> phrase,
and
those words are only meaningful for character colors.
Valid color names are:
black, red, green, yellow, blue, magenta, cyan, white
Color names may be abbreviated to the shortest series of letters that
uniquely identify the color. Background colors cannot be set without
setting foreground colors and if you want to set the background color
the 'on' keyword is required. Some examples:
set_ansi normal to bold black on white
(defines a normal display with bold black characters on a white
background)
set_ansi mine w
(text resulting from your actions will be displayed with white
characters)
set_ansi urgent to bold r on bold y
(defines an urgent display with bold red characters on a yellow
background. 'bold' as a modifier for the background
color is
ignored.)

You will have finished your new character creation procedure when you have finished reading these words. One of the first recommended commands to issue is "commands". That will display a list of all commands you can execute. You can get more information on each command listed by doing a "help ". One of the other commands you should issue early is "faq". This will display for you the Frequently Asked Questions, and their answers. Unfortunately, harassment is a fact of life on the net as in real life, but need not and should not be tolerated. The command "harassment" displays the fishroom harassment document (currently in development). Also note that the "shun" command provides you with a way to block messages from specific users as one method of dealing with unwanted attention. If you have any questions, please ask someone or contact a staff member. You can identify staff with the "staff" command, which lists the FishRoom staff members. You can find which of them are currently logged in by using the "who" command, which will tell you who is currently logged in.
You can view these tips again at any time by typing "newuser".
And now... onto the game!
